The W.G.Sebald Lecture 2023: Alberto Manguel

This year’s W.G. Sebald Lecture on literary translation is given by Alberto Manguel, the Argentinian-born, Canadian writer, translator and editor and acclaimed author of The Library at Night and A History of Reading.

His lecture Notes on the Art of Translation, explores Manguel’s thoughts on translation as a form of reading, of writing and of thinking. The translator is the secret sharer in the creation of a text, providing the original with what Borges called ‘a draft in another language’. Translation allows a text to come of age, generation after generation, and to enter a culture different from that of the original creator.

The event will be livestreamed at 16.00–17.30 (BST) and includes a live question and answer session.

The Sebald Lecture 2023 is presented by the British Centre for Literary Translation (BCLT), in association with the National Centre for Writing and the British Library.

Each of the participating Cities will introduce their residency, provide application information, what makes a successful resident and what residents get out of each residency experience. This will be followed up by a short Q&A.

This will be hosted by Alicia Sometimes, a local writer, poet and broadcaster (and a past virtual resident with Manchester City of Literature!)

The briefing will be held 1 March 2023 at 7pm. It will run on Zoom and be about 90 minutes and of course it is free!

AALITRA’s Tim Cummins receives PEN GRANT FOR THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF ITALIAN LITERATURE ($5,000)

Administered under and judged alongside the PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grants, the PEN Grant for the English Translation of Italian Literature honors a translator for a book-length translation of narrative prose and seeks to promote the publication of Italian literature into English. The winner receives a $5,000 grant to aid in the project’s completion.

Tim Cummins’s translation from the Italian of We Will Take Our Revenge by Paolo Nori
Judges’ citation: “Tim Cummins’s muscular translation of Paolo Nori’s radical, unhinged, and terrifically readable novel, We Will Take Our Revenge, distinguishes itself in its total ownership of voice. Tracing the unusual story of civil justice and parenting, Cummins’s translation finds a perfect point on the bridge between the music of the Italian sentence and the urgency of English. It is both foreign and deeply resonant.”

Congratulations Tim!
